MAGUPI

Portugal | World Beat Roots Music

MAGUPI (Márcio Pinto) is a Portuguese multi-instrumentalist and composer whose work bridges classical precision, West African rhythmic heritage, and contemporary electronic music. Trained in Classical Studies and specialized in marimba, balafon, and African percussion, his artistic language moves fluidly between acoustic depth and dancefloor energy.

A former masterclass lecturer at the Oporto Music University and performer with several world music ensembles — including the Oporto Symphonic Orchestra — Magupi combines academic rigor with lived rhythmic experience.

Extensive time spent in West Africa studying with master musicians profoundly shaped his musical identity, infusing his sound with authenticity, groove, and ancestral resonance.

At the heart of his live performances lies the electro-acoustic marimba — an instrument he transforms into a powerful bridge between organic percussion and electronic landscapes. His sets range from immersive sunset atmospheres to peak-time dancefloor journeys, blending deep textures, Afro-inspired rhythms, and globally influenced melodic structures. Each performance is dynamic, adaptable, and magnetically charged.

Magupi has performed across an impressive international circuit, including major festivals and iconic venues such as Boom Festival, Sónar, MOGA Festival, and Lux Frágil, alongside global stages in the USA, UK, Greece, Mexico, Turkey, Morocco, Germany, Egypt, Spain, UAE, Romania and beyond. From boutique beach venues like Scorpios Mykonos and Before Sunset Beach to underground Berlin institutions such as Klunkerkranich and Beate Uwe, his music resonates across diverse cultural and geographic landscapes.

With a sound that is organic yet forward-thinking, rooted yet exploratory, Magupi continues to redefine the boundaries between live instrumentation and electronic performance — creating immersive musical ecosystems that connect tradition, innovation, and collective celebration.
